I need some help with building a patio...?

I want to build a patio of the end of my deck. However I am running into a few problems. There are roots and underground power lines coming into my house where I want the patio. Has anyone built a raised patio, or any advise on how to do it? I know there needs to be some gravel and sand underneath. I need help...
